(If reading is still a thing)
Hi, i’m Genevieve and this is my helper/pet bunny Lavender. We have been using this cozy time to dream up our own little internet world— a magical place where you and your kids can make art and be in tune.
My career as an artist and art teacher has been slowly unfolding as seasons pass and I become more and more of myself. It has felt a bit like peeling back the layers of a tightly closed rosebud that resists blooming. But with time, the natural process of opening from the inside out is taking place.
I first understood I would be studying fine art when I stepped into the art building at Pepperdine University. It had a totally different learning environment than the rest of the campus and in my heart I just knew it was right for me. I come from a family of artists—my mother a ceramicist, my father a dancer, his mother a painter, her father an architect— I grew up making my own valentines, drawing horses from a book, making houses for my stuffed animals, and circling my school answers with fluffy little clouds.
After graduating from Pepperdine, I traveled with my mom to India where a whole other feeling of ‘home’ set in. There I happened upon a group of children who sell flowers by the holy river named Yamuna. I wanted to become friends with them so I drew their faces with their English names underneath. Over time our friendship grew and the more I shared with them the more they became confident in anything creative. it was a perfectly harmonious time of life and I spent the next five years living in Vrindavan as much as I could so that we could create together.
I had my last conversations with my grandmother (the painter) telling her about the children and all of our activities. She couldn’t understand my living in India, but she still approved. Her name was Jacqueline and her favorite color was Lavender. With her passing this little internet planet was born, acting as a feeble blog and hat shop and catalog of all the art projects I did with the kids.
I didn’t start teaching art to kids in America until recently when I walked into a Topanga boutique (Moonastar Collective) with my bunny Lavender, and asked if I could teach a Christmas gift making workshop for the kids I always saw hanging around the store. I also had the idea to start ‘Art-box-Babysitting’ and be a Mary Poppins sort of character who always had a box full of art supplies for the kids.
So I guess that is how I am here now, not fully bloomed, but feeling more like a rose :) My courses come from the heart. Whether you are a child or an adult they will give you permission to be yourself, an ever unfolding process.
